These are 8 Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu more than 1000
years old, where Lord Shiva has vanquished demons or divinities with
exemplary valor and fury. Shiva is
believed to have destroyed eight different demons namely Andakasuran,
Gajasuran, Jalandasuran, Thirupuradhi, Kaman, Arjunan, Dakshan and
Taaragasuran. Of these, seven temples
are Tevaram Sung temples, i.e. Thiruvazhuvur is not Tevaram sung temple. Presiding deity in all the temples is generally
called as Veeratteshwarar.
